Step 1: Mifepristone
What it does: It works by blocking progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone required to maintain the uterine lining and support the pregnancy.
The result: Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, the pregnancy detaches from the uterine wall, and it stops developing.
Step 2: Misoprostol
What it does: Taken 24 to 48 hours later, placed under the tongue (sublingually), or inside the vagina to dissolve, cause the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract.
The result: The contractions push the pregnancy tissue out of the uterus through the vagina. This stage usually feels similar to a heavy menstrual period.
